5 Must Have Decorating Tips For Any Wall Bed Owner
Just because you have a wall bed doesn’t mean it can’t still be stylish and attractive. When decorating, consider the fabric, print, color and style.
Fabric
Silky or velvety fabrics can be elegant and sophisticated, especially in dramatic colors. Micro-suede and flannel materials speak of warmth and coziness, inviting you to snuggle in. Crisp cottony materials seem fresh and cool. Try a flowery print in cool colors for a summery feel. Don’t be afraid of prints, if you stick to the same primary hue, you can effectively mix prints, stripes, and solids for a unique look. Select cool or neutral hues to create a room that exudes serenity and calm. A monochromatic color scheme is also calming, while warm, bright colors create a feeling of vibrancy. Bedding of either Pima or Egyptian cotton with a thread count of at least 250 is generally considered the most comfortable.
Lighting
For a multipurpose room you will also need different layers and types of lighting. Table lamps, especially the type that accommodate a three way light bulb are quite versatile. You will also want a central overhead light, anything from one with a ceiling fan to an elegant chandelier, depending on the look you are going for. The central overhead light can be connected to a dimmer, to control light intensity. Floor lamps come in many styles and can add both vertical interest and task lighting.
Decor
It is soothing to have color, fabrics, and motifs that flow from one room or area to the next. For example, if the bedroom has a tropical motif, continue the theme into the bathroom and hallway.
Make use of mirrors. They aren’t just for over the dresser and bathroom sink and they aren’t only for combing your hair, they are also great for decorating. Strategically placed, mirrors open up a room, making it appear larger and lighter. Hanging a large mirror on a wall with no windows will create a view where none exists, while also adding depth to the room.
Furniture
Often a room that has a wall bed is multifunctional. Keeping that in mind, try to choose multifunctional furniture as well. What serves as a night stand at bed time can become an occasional table during the day. A desk can also be a great bedside table, and the chair pushed up to it can become daytime seating. These night stands/occasional tables can also contain great storage. A dresser can also double as a hall table, and chairs and storage ottomans with wheels are easily rearranged at bed time. A cozy sitting area is always a welcome retreat in a bedroom. If you are trying to make a small space appear larger, try choosing sleek furniture that doesn’t take up too much visual space.
Window and Floor Treatments
Since the windows in a room that contains a wall bed are actually bedroom windows, they must block light and provide privacy. In addition to functional considerations, window treatments help create a room’s overall style. Swagged and gathered draperies in silk or velvet conjure up elegance and romance. Roman shades are both dramatic and sophisticated. Shutters bring to mind a summer cottage and pair nicely with a floral pattern in the drapes. These treatments can be layered to provide room darkening, insulation, and beauty.
Let your flooring reflect the overall style of the room. If you do not have a carpeted floor, a bare floor made of either painted or varnished wood with a large sisal rug in the center will tie together a cottage motif, while an oriental carpet or rug would be lovely in a more dramatic or formal decor.
