Top Myths You Might Believe About Your Mattress!

Take a look at some of the most popular myths about your mattress!

Your mattress is one of the most important pieces of furniture you own since you sleep on it every night and it has a big impact on your health and well-being. Therefore, there is a lot of information out there about what you should look for in a mattress and what to avoid. Unfortunately, not all of this information is accurate.

There are a lot of myths circulating about mattresses. We took a look at some of the most popular myths and provide information to help you understand the truth:

Myth #1: The Firmer the Mattress, the Better

A lot of people believe that a very firm mattress provides the best support for spine health. In reality, a very firm mattress provides little flexibility and keeps your spine straighter, which puts pressure on it. Your spine actually needs to maintain its natural curve, which a softer mattress will allow.

Don’t make the mistake of buying a mattress that is too soft though. Your spine does need support. You just need to strike the right balance to support your body while also relieving tension.

Myth #2: You Need a Box Spring

Traditionally, buying a mattress has meant also buying a box spring. That’s because mattresses were traditionally made to be much thinner, and the box spring was necessary to provide the proper support for the mattress and your spine.

These days, mattresses are much thicker and have much more support built in. So long as your bed frame has a strong platform, you don’t actually need to buy a box spring. And if you do have a bed and mattress that need a box spring, you don’t have to replace your old box spring when you replace the mattress unless the box spring has become damaged. The box spring does not wear out as quickly as the mattress.

Myth #3: Mattresses are One Size Fits All

You may think that if a mattress feels good to you it should feel good to your significant other also. But how a mattress feels for each person isn’t just a matter of personal preference. Your weight, spine health and overall health can affect the feel of a mattress. A larger person may need more support, for example.

Myth #4: You Can Use a Mattress Until It Sags

Mattresses start to lose their structural support long before they start sagging. You may not see the weakening structures in your mattress, but you may notice that your sleep is not the same quality that it used to be or that you don’t feel as comfortable on the mattress.

You should always replace your mattress every seven to 10 years, regardless of how it appears to the naked eye. The mattress just won’t provide the support you need after that.

A good mattress should also be part of a good bed for the best night’s sleep.
