A lot of people as us what the difference is between a wall bed and a Murphy Bed. A Murphy Bed is a metal frame that is attached to your floor or bottom sill in your wall. You place a 2″ bunkie board (small foundation) and then a mattress on the frame. It then operates up and down with a spring assist. A cabinet can be built around it or a simple screen can be placed in front of it when it is in the up position. We offer a library bed with swinging or sliding book cases or a bi-fold door enclosure for a Murphy Bed.
A wall bed is quite different. A wallbed has a wooden face that pulls down with the bed. A lot of manufacturers call a wall bed a Murphy Bed, but in fact, they are quite different. There are a number of mechanism’s for wall beds. Most of them involve a hydraulic shock or a metal spring. At Lift and Stor Beds, we use the Murphy Bed system on our library bed, a hydraulic system on our Designer Series, and a spring system on our Premier and Luxury Series. Wall beds can be either vertical or horizontal. Horizontal beds are rotated 90 degrees and open sideways. These are useful if you don’t have an 8 foot ceiling.
When looking at different manufacturers the biggest consideration is the quality of the mechanism and the construction. These beds use a high quality hydraulic piston type mechanism and solid wood veneers (NO particleboard!). If you choose, you can get an unfinished wall bed that you can use as your blank canvas and add moulding, pictures, chalkboards, etc. Thousands of options await your creative mind! If you prefer us to do the work, we have standard packages available so you can get a finished bed at a great price. Or, tell us your vision and we will make it happen!
Premier Series Murphy and Wall Beds: If you want that custom look or want to add a home office with your wall bed, the Premier Series is the choice for you. These beds use a high quality spring balance mechanism that is the best in the industry. Our most popular collection of wall beds with dozens of options available to choose from. You can work with our designers to design a bed that is exactly what you want. Don’t worry about selecting a finish from a color chart, we will make it the exact color you want or match an existing piece of furniture. Our premier series bed is also available unfinished if you feel the urge to get creative. Get just the wallbed, or add a simple bookcase, wardrobe cabinet or full home office to get multiple uses out of one room!
Luxury Series Murphy and Wall Beds: If you are looking to make a statement with your wall bed, then the luxury series is the choice for you. Library Series Murphy Bed: The Library series is a very unique Murphy Bed. Swinging bookcases open to reveal a hidden bed. Your friends will be amazed when you open this up.
